PlayStation 3

The Playstation 3 is Sony's third gaming console. A successor to the Playstation 2, the PS3 is in competition with the
Microsoft Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii, as part of the sevent generation of games consoles. First revealed during the
summer of 2005, the PS3 was one of the most highly anticipated pieces of technology during 2006. It launched in the US
and Japan in November that year, and then was launched in Europe and Australia in March 2007. The Ps3 system uses
a Blu Ray drive instead of a normal DVD drive. It can play both Blu Ray games and movies in full 1080p High Definition.
There are two versions of the PS3, the 20Gb basic model and 60Gb premium. The 20GB was discontinued in all countries
except Japan in April 2007, due to low customer demand. The higher end 60Gb version has a HMDi port, Wi Fi, several
flash card readers, 4 USB ports, an ethernet port, and Bluetooth controllers and headsets.
The PS3 has recieved a lot of criticism since release, mostly around the hefty price tag of £425. However, the included
Blu Ray drive and many other multimedia features make it a very worthwhile purchase, and the console is the most
powerful of the three, incorporating IBM's new Cell proccessor. The PS3's new Sixaxis controller is similar to the Dualshock
in looks, but uses a new motion sensing feature for use in many of the Ps3's titles, most notably driving games. Because
of the console's 4 months on the market, it has not developed the kind of games that similar console Xbox 360 has. However,
a large list of both exclusive and Multiplatform titles are scheduled for release during 2007, including Killzone 2, and
Metal Gear Solid 4. The PS3's online service, PSN, is free of charge and lets users play games online, surf the net, add
friends, and download games, demos, and videos. September 2007 sees the launch of Playstation Home, an innovative new
online 3D world, where players can create characters in a Sims like environment, and interact with each other. This is also
due to be completely free of charge.
